Gateway to the west side
The Drive to Glacier's West Side
Whitefish is the last real town on the drive to the west side of Glacier National Park. From here it is a straight run up the highway to the west entrance and the start of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Once you pass the gates there is nowhere left to stop that is not a park-lodge counter with a park-lodge line. Westside Market sits on the way out of town, so it is the natural place to sort the trip out before the road climbs.
Where Westside fits in the day
A Glacier day works best when you leave Whitefish early, ahead of the gate traffic and the timed-entry crush in summer. Roll through, get everyone squared away, and you are on the road east while the light is still low over the peaks. The reason to stop here is simple. It is the last easy pull-in before a long stretch with no good options, because after town it is highway, then park, then whatever you brought with you.
The way back
Glacier days run long, and the drive home lands you back in Whitefish tired and usually hungry. Westside stays open late, so a cold drink, something real to eat, and a tank for tomorrow are waiting at the edge of town instead of nothing at all. Planning the day inside the park itself? Our Fuel Up guide for Glacier covers exactly what to pack and grab before you go.
